10 Primal Foods We Eat Every Week
We often get asked what our daily meals look like. As a health coach, my clients like basic meals that can be made without a complicated recipe or ingredients that you have to ask Siri to pronounce. We love to experiment with different recipes and adventurous foods, but on an average week we have settled into our favorites that always seem to wind up on our menu. After being primal for eight years, these are the top 10 primal foods that we just can’t seem to get enough.
- Cauliflower
Cauliflower is easily our favorite food substitute. Cauliflower fried rice, cauliflower mashed potatoes, cauliflower pizza crust, cauliflower tabbouleh, or just simply roasted cauliflower. If you haven’t used cauliflower in place of grain, we highly suggest it! Stayed tuned for our Foodie Fridays – we’ll be sure to post some of our favorite cauli recipes. - Eggs
There is so SO much to be done with eggs. We always have pasture raised eggs on hand since they are such a delicious, cheap, and healthy source of primal friendly protein. Our kids love scrambled “butter eggs,” you just can’t beat a fried egg on top of a grass fed burger, and breakfast for dinner is always a welcomed menu item at our house. - Avocados
Avocados are super popular these days, which is great since they are a power house of nutrition. We love to have avocados on hand to simply slice up and sprinkle with lemon pepper. Guacamole on Primal Taco Tuesday? Yes please. - Roasted Veggies
I know this sounds like a basic side, but we love to simply grab a veggie, toss it in olive oil and salt, add crushed garlic, broil for 15 minutes, and finish with some fresh squeeze lemon juice. Bam… that’s our side for the night. Our personal favorites are broccoli, asparagus, and brussel sprouts. - Chicken Thighs
Every week, we seem to have some version of chicken thighs on the menu. We cook boneless skinless thighs in our pressure cooker and shred the meat with a variety of sauces depending on our mood (salsa, buffalo, bbq, etc). Or we make mouthwatering crispy chicken with bone-in/skin-on thighs. (This meal is definitely a kid approved feast!) - Salad
We enjoy a salad with pretty much any meal. Over the years, we have created dozens of different ways to mix up a salad. From our favorite keto cole slaw to a super satisfying Cobb salad. Oftentimes, its just a big handful of spinach or arugula on the plate before we put down our chicken thigh or main dish. We go through lettuce like crazy in the Prendergast house!! - Ground Pork
Oh man!!! Berkshire and pasture raised. We buy our ground pork in bulk from a local farm. It has become a staple in our house. Mix it 50/50 with grass fed ground beef for the BEST burger. We often make “egg cups” with ground pork for a quick on the go breakfast. Ground pork is also amazing in an Asian inspired stir fry. We just can’t get enough. - Macadamia Nuts
These are the ‘Mac Daddy’ (pun intended) of nuts!! Macadamias are so buttery and lightly sweet and super nutrient dense. This is Brendan’s go to source of keto fuel. Be careful though – its easy to over eat these goodies. We usually potion them out to avoid eating the whole bag in one setting. - Salmon
Seafood makes an amazing primal meal, and we truly love it all. But Salmon is a fish that makes our menu weekly. Smoked salmon is super easy to add onto a salad. Canned wild alaskan salmon makes an amazing “salmon patty” meal. But our personal favorite is a fillet of salmon in the cast iron skillet – just watch out as we all fight over the salmon skin “bacon”. - Dark chocolate
I always have a Lindt 90% chocolate bar on hand. It totally hits the spot when I get a sweet tooth craving and makes it easy for me to turn down other desserts that I know will make me feel droopy afterward. Just a square or two, and Mama’s happy.
BONUS: Espresso!!
Since its not a food it doesn’t count for the list. But espresso is almost a daily part of our “dining habits.” An afternoon espresso is something we both enjoy. Usually its just a single shot black. But when we’re feeling like a treat – add a little foam and a square of dark chocolate — excuse me while I go brew one now.
So what are some items that pop up on your menu every week? Do we share some of the same favorites?
